“For Better or For Worse”

“For better, or for worse,” We declare in our marriage vows.

I got to thinking about something.  It’s like this in our relationship, our marriage to God.

Things happen in our day to day lives that seem to push our faith to the limits at times, hopefully we remain upright, not wavering. When we do, we grow much.

I can look back at a rough patch in my marriage and even a time when it seemed God was distant, though it was probably me, and I can see how He was there all along – through the better times and through the worse ones.

Even if when we tire, even when we fail…He is faithful, my friends.

We can’t always know why things happen.  Sometimes life seems to be going good and then out of no where you are handed lemons. At least that is how our flesh perceives it.

Or maybe you have had some rough times back to back to back and gotten used to lemon-handling, but still find yourself scratching your head,  wondering into the world of “why?

Maybe you’ve surrendered. You are holding up the white flag high – but your flesh still wants to wonder why.

Why me, Lord?

Maybe you are like me, who found herself thinking defending thoughts such as:

My husband works so hard, he cares so much…why do crazy things happen at the most odd times?

But something happens when I get my mind fixated on the why.

My spirit, my soul becomes heavy.  Weighed down by cares.

When I get my eyes onto the things I can not control because I took my eyes off the One who is in control, I am not living the abundant life He has called me to.

It is soul sapping. Strength scorching.

Psalm 55:22

Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders—
he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out.
He’ll never let good people topple to ruin..”

Romans 8:26-28

“Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.”

Romans 8:35

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?”

So what shall I think, what shall I do when life doesn’t go the way I think it should?

After some time to ponder and pray,

I start to remember His faithful Way,

I start thinking not from anxiety,

but from rest.

I start thinking,

He knows best.

I let go.

And live.

With joy.

Right where I am.

Lord help me to trust in you.  Help me to let go of the life I think would be more beneficial for us. Help me to stop comparing our lives to the world’s standards.  Keep my eyes on You and the Prize.  Help me daily surrender my life to you, with hands open and ready to love and live, and truly give.  Build my character the way you see fit. Keep me strong in You, through whatever comes my way. Never let me give up or give in.  You won, You win. – Meg

This is Post is Part 1 of the Character Garden Series (because when I write I am not always sure what will come forth or where it will go – I have created a few different “series/categories” that they can be tucked into. This also helps me break down blog posts from novel length to a realistic length.  We moms ain’t got all day, haha!)

  1. Meghan, I think I somehow missed this beautiful post. I had to step back a little the last month of so but the Jesus and Coffee linkup is back up and running. Thank you for linking up even if I am late 🙂 I LOVE the quote at the end….I may have to write that one down! ❤

    1. Hey, Jen! I thought you had been taking some time with the conference and all but wasn’t sure. So glad to hear you are back. I appreciate you stopping by and being an encouragement! Prayers and blessings! xoxoxo

  2. So true: “When I get my eyes onto the things I can not control because I took my eyes off the One who is in control, I am not living the abundant life He has called me to.” I’ve been praying Promise Prayers and one I’ve been praying is: “Thank You LORD that You are true, honorable, just, pure, commendable, of excellence and worthy of our praise. Thank You that as we think upon WHO You are that we are filled with faith, hope and love in each and every circumstance.”

    1. Love that prayer, Anna. There’s something about speaking aloud what we know deep inside of us. Our ears need to hear truth in a world bombarded with untruths. Thanks for commenting here, friend. Blessings!!

  3. Thank you for the reminder that God is there and He is faithful all along. Your poem is beautiful, and I agree that being mindful in each moment will allow us to reap the most joy of everyday experiences. We need to remind ourselves to “Set our minds on things above” and we must make these moment by moment choices to step into or step out from Him.
